How to Make the Best Chicken Soup

Ingredients and directions on how to make the best chicken soup.

Most people dread the time of year when the cold weather rolls in and gusts of wind blow off your hat while your nose starts to run. Cold weather climates causes people to get sick, isolate people due to being forced to stay inside and eat unhealthy. One of the best foods to eat during the cold weather months is a personal favorite, chicken soup.

Chicken soup can be bought by the can and heated up quickly, however the best chicken soup is homemade chicken soup. To make chicken soup in your own kitchen, you need to purchase a handful of ingredients from your local food store or you can order all of your ingredients online through Amazon, Walmart, Target, Stop & Shop’s Peapod or even UberEats. There are countless delivery options to get fresh ingredients delivered to your front door and cook chicken soup.

Ingredients for Chicken Soup

Ingredients for homemade chicken soup include the following:

  • 1 raw whole chicken
  • 1 lb of fresh carrots
  • 1 fresh stalk of celery
  • 1 fresh white onion
  • 3 cloves of fresh garlic
  • 4 bay leaves
  • 32oz of chicken broth
  • olive oil
  • salt
  • pepper
  • oregano
  • pasta

How to Prepare Chicken Soup

To start preparing your chicken soup, you will need all of the ingredients listed above, along with a large cooking pot, a large spoon or ladle, a chefs knife and cutting board.

Chop your vegetables

The first step to cooking chicken soup is to dice up your vegetables. Wash all of your vegetables with warm water to makes sure any dirt or pesticides are cleaned off. Cut off the ends of your carrots and peel the outer layer of skin before slicing the carrots into smaller pieces. You will cut the celery at the bottom of the stalk and slice into smaller pieces as well. When you take your onion, make sure you peel off the outer layer of skin, cut off both ends, and dice finely. Take the garlic and dice finely as well.

Next, you will pour 1 tablespoon of olive oil into the large pot on low heat and place garlic, onions, carrots and celery into the pot to start sautéing the vegetables. As they vegetables are sautéing, sprinkle salt, pepper and oregano to mix into the natural flavors. At this point you will start to smell the delicious aromas in your kitchen.

Creating the broth out of your chicken

The next step to getting you chicken soup made is to place your whole chicken into the pot on top of your vegetables. As the chicken begins to gain heat, pour the 32 ounces of chicken brother inside the pot followed by 4-6 cups of water depending on how big your cooking pot is. It is good to pour enough water to cover the entire chicken so it is submerged in the vegetables, spices, broth and water. At this point, place the bay leaves in the water, cover your cooking pot, and raise the flame to high until your water boils. As the heat rises, your chicken will begin to cook in its’ natural juices with fresh ingredients to create a flavorful chicken soup. Once your soup comes to a boil, lower the heat down to low and let it simmer for at least an hour to make sure the chicken cooks thoroughly, the flavors disperse throughout the entire broth, and the chicken marinates in the natural spices and fresh vegetables.

Choose your starch

You can choose your starch based on personal preferences. If you prefer to eat rice instead of pasta, you can always boil a few cups of white rice or brown rice to eat with your chicken soup. But if you prefer to eat pasta, you can boil water to make pasta to eat with your chicken soup. Either option is a good choice.

Pick apart the chicken

As your chicken cooks in the broth, the chicken will start to come apart and fall off the bones in some cases. It is good to start pulling the chicken apart so the shreds of white meat can mix to the bottom and top throughout the entire broth. Of course, this goes without saying but it is important to remove any small bones that comes off of the chicken. However, I like to leave in the large pieces like the drumstick to add more flavor in the soup. I get to eat the drumstick after I finish my soup as an extra bonus 🙂

Dig in

Once you have your pasta or rice ready and the soup has cooked through, you can start to eat your soup. Add your pasta or rice into a bowl and pour a ladle full of soup into the bowl. Be sure to include all ingredients into your serving! The meat, the vegetables, the spices and the starch; they all play a key role into making the best chicken soup.

Pro Tip: add parmesan cheese on top of your soup before you dig in for even more flavor!
